The Literary Dick (as in Private Detective)
welcomes questions about literary mysteries and scandals, which should be sent to: woodyswoody@hotmail.com. The Literary Dick (as in Private Detective) is published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, by Jonathanames.com. Just so you know, Jonathan Ames, our mentor here at this website, has a new book coming out in July, called, Wake Up, Sir!

Unfortunately I haven’t had time to put together a more extensive posting, as I have been preparing for my interview with the British Consulate. It is my hope to get a visa, and move to London, where I can pursue literary detecting in the world’s leading center for that activity.

Hemingway’s Nudie Gene & Paranoia
The Literary Dick recently featured Edward Champion’s query about the possibility of a gene in the Hemingway family, which induces its members to get naked a lot. To answer this, I asked some of my friends who are doctors if such a thing is possible.
Dr. Dean wrote,
“Hi Mike
Some clarification on why you're pursuing this wierd question would be good.
As far as I know, I don't think Naturism runs in families - it's probably more
nurture than nature. No actual evidence to support that however. If anyone has
any evidence to support a genetic link between walking around in the buff and
genes, please share it with the rest of the class.
Peace
Dean”
And from Dr. Rob (see Archives for The Case of Mary McCarthy and an oddly shaped penis and the one where we went nuts in Atlantic City),
“hi mike,
don't know of any gene which predisposes to nudism, or even any that
predisposes to sweating a lot requiring acute exfoliation of clothing. murphy [another doctor] might know as she has been exposing her breasts regularly recently.
suppose you could check out the "genome project" though if you wanted a
definitive answer.
rob”
So, it is the opinion of The Literary Dick, that the Nudie Gene doesn’t run in the Hemingway family, because that gene does not exist. (I will check out the Genome Project angle, to make sure of this.)
More of Papa’s Paranoia . . .
Here is the nice email I got from Doug B., in response to Papa’s Paranoia Part I , (which was written to answer Doug’s question).
“Hey, I appreciate your still remembering this!
I read your account, and it's interesting -- I was just curious if Simmons was telling the truth, and if so if other biographers had picked up on it. I was (and am) intrigued by the notion that even in a life as heavily documented as Hemingway's, some things were still unknown.
thanks again -- I hope you can come up with Part Two.
Doug”
And Lastly…
I was at the library today, and this guy was on the internet, and this is the website he was checking out: Chnlove.com.
